Welcome to the ARCHICAD Training Series!

You are now reading Algorithmic design and ARCHICAD, a conceptual training with a short hands-on exercise and multiple examples to familiarize you with Algorithmic BIM workflows. This guide is meant for users with a basic understanding of Rhinoceros, Grasshopper and ARCHICAD, who are trying to gain a broader understanding of the range of possibilities of Algorithmic workflows.

How to use this Training Guide

There are two ways to benefit from this training material:

  • Install the required versions of Rhino, Grasshopper and ARCHICAD, plus the Grasshopper - ARCHICAD Live Connection and follow the instructions in this online Guide. 
  • Check the related video clips in the online Guide or watch them on the ARCHICAD YouTube Channel.
  • To gain a conceptual understanding only, do not install applications yet; simply read the online Guide and watch the related video clips that are embedded in this online Guide.

To complete the hands-on part of the training: You must have ARCHICAD 20Grasshopper - ARCHICAD Live Connection 1.6 installed on your computer. The e-book was made with the INT (English) version of ARCHICAD, so we recommend that you use this version for practicing.

How to get ARCHICAD

If you do not have ARCHICAD yet, please visit to obtain a FREE installer:

  • If you are a student, a teacher or a representative of a school, download a fully functional version of ARCHICAD and apply for an education license from
  • If you are a professional architect, download a fully functional version of ARCHICAD and apply for a 30-day trial license from Projects saved with this version can be automatically upgraded to full versions when you purchase a commercial license.

How to get Rhino 5.0

Please visit

This website provides information about the pricing of the Rhino license in your specific geographical area. You have the option to download a trial version as well. Rhino and Grasshopper are developed by McNeel worldwide.

Type your e-mail address to download, then click next. You can choose between the English version and other languages. Click ‘Download English Now’. After downloading, run the .exe file. Click ‘Install Rhino ‘ to start the installation. Type your name and e-mail address, choose ‘Evaluate Rhino’, agree to the Terms and Conditions, then click Next. Here you can change the installation folder if you want to. Click Next. After the installation is completed, click the Close button to exit the Setup Wizard.

How to get Grasshopper

Grasshopper is a free plugin to Rhino, so as soon as Rhino is up and running, you can download Grasshopper for Windows from here:

Download the latest Grasshopper for Rhino 5.0 by clicking on the Download button. Type your e-mail address, click Next, then click ‘Download Now’. After downloading, open the .rhi file. Choose whether to Install Grasshopper for Just Me or Anyone who uses this computer, then click Next to begin installation. After the installation is completed click the Close button to exit the Setup Wizard.

How to get the Grasshopper - ARCHICAD Live Connection

The Grasshopper - ARCHICAD Live Connection is a free add-on to ARCHICAD, so once ARCHICAD is running, you can download the connection from here:

Download the Grasshopper-ARCHICAD 20 Live Connection version 1.6 (20.0.4512) file. After the downloading finished, run the .msi file. Follow the steps in the installation window and install the Add-On. When the installation is completed, click Finish to exit the Setup Wizard.
